Abstract Expressionism at El Paseo Exhibition 2002
Return to current El Paseo Tour
World-renowned ceramist, Peter Voulkos has been acclaimed as the father of
abstract expressionism in sculpture. He is recognized as the creative genius
responsible for the transformation of ceramics from craft to the level of fine
art.
Twelve of his bronzes, from a private art collection, have been chosen for
the El Paseo Exhibition 2002, which will be unveiled Thursday, January 17, at
4 p.m. on El Paseo (between Larkspur and San Pablo).
These chimney-topped vessels, from the Voulkos "stack" series, recall a cross
between a classical jar and a firing kiln. Each piece has the look of a once
sleek vessel that has shattered and been put back together again. Some may observe
that the sculptural forms reflect a southwest influence. This interpretation
is enhanced by the earth tones reflected in the lustrous patina.
The dozen monumental bronze vessels, range in height from four to six feet.
In addition, the artist has designed and fabricated pedestals that will showcase
the sculptures at the appropriate height for both automobile and pedestrian
viewing.
